Third party plus fire and theft
FTP cover
Full Third Party, Fire and Theft. It gives other people the protection of RTA cover, usually at higher limits, and it covers your own vehicle if it is stolen or damaged by fire.
- Meets the third-party requirement for licensing.
- Covers fire, lightning, explosion and theft of your vehicle.
- Does not cover accident damage to your own vehicle.
Have your vehicle registration number ready.
What it covers
Covered
- Everything RTA cover pays for: injury, death and property damage to other people, at higher limits.
- Fire, lightning and explosion damage to your vehicle.
- Theft of your vehicle, and damage caused during an attempted theft.
- Stolen parts and accessories, as listed in your policy wording.
Not covered
- Accident or collision damage to your own vehicle, whoever was at fault.
- Injury to you, the driver.
- Wear and tear, and mechanical or electrical breakdown.
- Personal belongings stolen from inside the vehicle.
- Anything outside Zimbabwe, unless your policy extends there.
Limits and what you pay
Third-party limits are higher than RTA cover. Your own vehicle is covered for fire and theft up to its insured value.
- Fire and theft of your vehicle
- Up to the insured value
Check your policy schedule for any excess, the part you pay on a claim.
Add fire and theft protection to your legal cover.
One policy for other people and for your vehicle against fire and theft.
When to make a claim
FTP pays for two kinds of loss: claims made against you by other people, and fire or theft loss to your own vehicle.
Your vehicle is stolen
Report it to the police at once, then tell your insurer the same day.
Your vehicle is damaged by fire
Make everyone safe first. Keep the damaged vehicle and parts for inspection.
Thieves damage your vehicle or take parts
Attempted-theft damage and stolen parts or accessories can be claimed, subject to your policy wording.
You injure someone or damage their property
Follow the same steps as for RTA cover. Your insurer handles the claim against you.
Collision damage to your own vehicle
FTP does not pay for it. If another driver was at fault, claim from their insurer.
How to make a claim
- Get to safety and call the police
Theft or hijacking: report to the police immediately and ask for a report number. Fire: get everyone clear and call the fire brigade and the police. Every accident must be reported within 24 hours.
- Protect the evidence
Take photos. Do not sell, scrap or dispose of the damaged vehicle or parts until your insurer says so.
- Do not admit fault or settle
If a third party is involved, say what happened without accepting blame. Do not pay a deposit or agree a settlement before speaking to your insurer.
- Tell your insurer
Do it the same day if you can. Many policies set a 30-day limit for notice, and a late claim can be turned down.
- Send the documents
Claim form, police report, a copy of your driving licence, and any repair quotations your insurer asks for.
- Assessment and payout
Your insurer inspects, then repairs, replaces or pays cash up to the vehicle's value. If the vehicle is financed, the finance company may be paid first.
Have these ready
- Police report or report number
- Claim form from your insurer
- Copy of your driving licence
- Vehicle registration and policy details
- Photos of the damage or the scene
- Repair quotations, if your insurer asks
- Details of any third party and witnesses
Good to know
- FTP is not a substitute for Comprehensive. If you cause a crash, your own vehicle is still not repaired.
- Cover for your vehicle is limited to its insured value, so keep that close to the vehicle's market value.
- Check your policy schedule for any excess on fire and theft claims.
- Third-party rules and limits are set by law and can change. Your policy schedule is always the final word.
